ASSOCIATE IN APPLIED ARTS AND SCIENCE DEGREE

 

The Transition Program is one and a half years in length and includes liberal arts and nursing courses. However, a student may elect to complete any of the liberal arts courses prior to admission to the ADN program. The program is a fast track/accelerated course of study and is designed to expand upon previous education and experience. Students are expected to apply prior knowledge to all nursing courses.

Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate is eligible to write a national licensure examination to become a registered nurse.

 

Students are required to achieve and maintain an 80% pass rate in their course of study and a grade of satisfactory in each clinical course. Courses related to the nursing program (including pre-nursing courses ADN 203, HE 101, HE 210 and HE 224) only can be taken a total of two times. Failure to meet these requirements will result in the student’s potential lack of acceptance to or exclusion from the program.

 

Any failure or withdrawal from the Nursing program after drop and add will result in tuition loss and may impact financial aid.

 

St. Clair County Community College’s associate degree nursing program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.

 

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING (BSN)

 

BSN transfer option

 

Students planning to continue their education in nursing after attaining an Associate Degree in Nursing at SC4 must inform their academic advisor of this plan. Students may want to incorporate courses that are required by all BSN programs, such as microbiology. Academic advisors have current information on those universities with direct relationships with SC4.

 

PROGRAM OUTCOMES/OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of the Program, the graduate will:

1. Direct care outcome:  provide holistic evidence-based (HEB) direct care to diverse clients using the nursing process.
2. Communication outcome:  use effective communication to deliver holistic evidence-based (HEB) health care.
3. Teaching outcome:  provide teaching for the diverse client.
4. Management outcome:  manage the delivery of care for diverse clients within their environment.
5. Professional outcome:  demonstrate accountability through the integration of ethical, legal, professional standards, and holistic evidence-based (HEB) nursing practice.

 

PRE-ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The pre-admission requirements are:

 

1. Achieve a minimum selective GPA of 2.7 based on courses that apply to the Associate Degree Nursing program
2. All nursing and general education courses must be completed with a most recent grade of “C” or better to be considered in the applicant pool.
3. Complete, or be currently enrolled in, the following SC4 prerequisite courses prior to the Oct. 1 application deadline in order to be considered for admission:

• **HE 101 Math Related to Drug Administration
• **ADN 203 Nursing Process and Health Assessment
• **HE 224 Altered States of Adult Health
• BIO 160 or BIO 272 and BIO 272

 

Note:  **These courses must be taken within five years of admission to the nursing program except the BIO’s listed above.

 

HESI Pre-admission Test must be taken at SC4.

 

Fulfillment of these criteria does not guarantee admission to the nursing program.

 

APPLYING FOR ADMISSION

Persons seeking admission to the RN - Associate Degree Nursing (ADN)- AASNT, program must:

 

1. Submit a completed Application for Admission to SC4 to the Enrollment Services office by October 1, of the year prior to program start. Indicate on the application the program of study:  AGEGE - General Education.
2. Meet with an advisor regarding program prerequisites and admission to the nursing program. Schedule an appointment by calling (810) 989-5520.
3. Attend a mandatory Transition Nursing Group Advising session.
4. Submit a completed Allied Health Application along with payment of the application fee designating Transition Program to Enrollment Services by October 1 of the year prior to program start. Students applying for admission will receive a letter of receipt via email.
5. Register to take the HESI Pre-Admission Test prior to the Oct. 1 deadline. Visit website https://sc4.edu/support-services/testing-center/hesi-testing/ for more information. To register and pay for the HESI please go to THE PIER at https://stclair.nbsstore.net/.
6. Submit a copy of your current unencumbered Michigan professional LPN or HCP licensure to the Nursing Dept. either by fax (810) 989-5667 or email nursing@sc4.edu, once received permission will be given to enroll in ADN 203. This must be submitted by Oct. 1, of the year prior to program start.
7. Submit college transcripts to SC4 Enrollment Services office by Oct. 1, of the year prior to program start from all previously attended colleges other than SC4.
8. Provide evidence of work experience as an LPN or HCP from your most recent employer (Pay stubs not accepted). This must be submitted by Oct .1 of the application year to the Nursing Office.
9. LPNs with strong, up-to-date drug knowledge may consider taking the NLN Pharmacology competency exam to waive ADN 124. It must be taken within two years of admission to the ADN program. Applicants planning to pursue a career in registered nursing who have a criminal record of felony or misdemeanor conviction should contact the Health and Human Services division to determine employment restrictions based upon these convictions

 

ACCEPTANCE PROCEDURE

1. Qualified applications will be reviewed by the Nursing Department in the fall semester of the application year. The transition program begins in the winter semester (January). Notification of applicant acceptances and rejections will be mailed. Acceptance into the program is based on space availability and entrance criteria that includes GPA, credits taken towards a nursing degree and HESI Pre-admission test results. 2. Accepted applicants will be required to attend an ADN program orientation after admission. Course schedules for winter registration will be provided at this orientation session.
3. Upon admission and before classes begin, students must submit a completed Physical Examination Form. Forms needed for physical will be provided during orientation. Evidence of current CPR for the Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association or the Red Cross must be provided. Online only courses will not be accepted. A course will be made available to you if you are not a current Healthcare Provider BLS card holder.
