CERTIFICATE, One-year
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Practical Nursing (PN) program prepares the graduate to provide direct patient care with supervision. A grade of “C” or better is required in all courses in the program to successfully complete the program. Upon successful completion of the required courses, the graduate is eligible to write a national licensure examination to become a practical nurse (LPN). The program is one year in length.
Transportation to and from the clinical facility is the sole responsibility of the student. In all nursing programs, students are required to purchase uniforms approved by the Health and Human Services division.
PROGRAM OUTCOMES/OBJECTIVES:
When students complete this program, they will be able to:
- provide direct care, based on the nursing process for the individual patient and family with well-defined nursing diagnoses within a structured setting, under supervision of the RN, physicians or other persons authorized by State law.
- utilize basic communication skills with individual patients, families, and other health team members.
- recognize a patient’s need for information and assist in formulation, implementation, evaluation, and modification of a standard teaching plan.
- organize aspects of care with the assistance of health team members for individual patients and families for whom one is accountable.
- demonstrate accountability for own practice under the direction of health professionals, using ethical and legal parameters of nursing practice.
APPLYING FOR ADMISSION:
Persons seeking admission to the PN-Practical Nursing certificate- CERLP, program must:
- Submit a completed Application for Admission to SC4, indicating an AGEGE, General Education program code as the program of study.
- Submit a completed Allied Health Application along with payment of the application fee designating Licensed Practical Nursing to Enrollment Services by September 1 of application year. Students applying for admission will receive a letter of receipt via email.
- Meet with an advisor regarding admission to the nursing program. Schedule an appointment by calling (810) 989-5520.
- Official college and high school transcripts must be received by SC4 by September 1, if you have previously attended a college other than SC4.
- Attend a mandatory Practical Nurse Group Advising session.

Applicants planning to pursue a career in registered nursing who have a criminal record of felony or misdemeanor conviction should contact the Health and Human Services division to determine employment restrictions based upon these convictions.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
- High school graduate or GED required
- Overall GPA 2.5 or better in college level work. Applicants with no college experience may use their high school GPA when applying.
- BIO 160 or BIO 271 and BIO 272 and HE 101, or equivalent, must be completed within five years from application to the program, and with a “C” or above.
Fulfillment of these criteria does not guarantee admission to the nursing program.
ACCEPTANCE PROCEDURE:
Qualified applications will be reviewed by the Nursing Department in the Fall semester for the LPN program (program starts the following winter semester in January). Notification of applicant acceptances and rejections will be mailed. Acceptance into the program is based on space, availability and entrance criteria that includes the overall GPA, and score based on points received for recommended courses and pre-admission HESI test results. Accepted LPN applicants will be required to attend an LPN program orientation after admission. At the LPN program orientation session, course schedules for winter semester will be distributed.
Upon admission and before classes begin in the winter semester, students will need to submit a completed Physical Examination Form. Forms needed for physical will be provided during orientation. Evidence of current CPR for the Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association or the Red Cross. Online only courses will not be accepted. A course will be made available to you if you are not a current Healthcare Provider BLS card holder.
