Transition Nursing Program, AAS

FOR CURRENT LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSES AND LICENSED HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS
ASSOCIATE IN APPLIED ARTS AND SCIENCE DEGREE

 

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Transition Program is one and a half years in length and includes liberal arts and nursing courses. However, a student may elect to complete any of the liberal arts courses prior to admission to the ADN program. The program is a fast track/accelerated course of study and is designed for those with a healthcare provider license, to expand upon previous education and experience. Students are expected to apply prior knowledge to all nursing courses.

Students are required to achieve and maintain an 80% (B-) pass rate in all ADN courses and a grade of satisfactory in each clinical course. Liberal Art courses taken prior to and in the program: students are to achieve a (C) or above to be considered for admission and to progress once admitted. There is a two-attempt limit to courses related to the nursing program (including pre-nursing courses ADN 123/123L, HE 101, HE 210 and HE 224). Failure to meet these requirements will result in the student’s potential lack of acceptance to or exclusion from the program.

 

Any failure or withdrawal from the Nursing program after drop and add will result in tuition loss and may impact financial aid.

 

Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate is eligible to write a national licensure examination to become a registered nurse.

 

St. Clair County Community College’s associate degree nursing program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.

 

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING (BSN)

 

BSN transfer option

 

Students planning to continue their education in nursing after attaining an Associate Degree in Nursing at SC4 must inform their academic advisor of this plan. Students may want to incorporate courses that are required by all BSN programs, such as microbiology. Academic advisors have current information on those universities with direct relationships with SC4.

 

PROGRAM OUTCOMES/OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of the Program, the graduate will:

  1. Human Flourishing outcome: advocate for diverse individuals and their families by supporting their autonomy, dignity, and continuous development.
  2. Nursing Judgement outcome:  make judgments in practice, supported with evidence and rationale, to provide direct, safe, quality care and promote the health of individuals within the family and community context.
  3. Professional Identify outcome:  demonstrate their role with integrity, responsibility, and ethics using evidence-based practice, effective communication, caring, and advocacy to provide safe, quality care to diverse individuals..
  4. Spirit of Inquiry outcome:  analyze the evidence that supports nursing practice to challenge established norms, question underlying assumptions, and provide new perspectives using effective communication to enhance the quality of care for diverse individuals, families, and communities.

 

PRE-ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

 

The pre-admission requirements are:

 

  1. Selected GPA of 2.7 based on courses that apply to the ADN program: BIO 272, ADN 123/123L, HE 101, HE 106, HE 224, ENG 101, ENG 102, PSY 180, PS 101, HE 210
  2. Complete, or be currently enrolled in, the following SC4 prerequisite courses prior to the Oct. 1 application deadline in order to be considered for admission:
  • **HE 101 Math Related to Drug Administration
  • **ADN 123/123L Nursing Assessment/Clinical
  • **HE 224 Altered States of Adult Health
  • BIO 160 or BIO 271 and BIO 272
  • ENG 101 English Composition I

 

Note:  **Complete courses within five academic years of admission to the nursing program.

 

  1. Attend a mandatory Transition Nursing Group Advisory session.
  2. Complete pre-admission HESI at SC4, no other testing is accepted. Register to take HESI preassessment test by September 30. To register and pay for the HESI please go to THE PIER at https://stclair.nbsstore.net/testing.
  3. Submit official college transcripts if transferring in credits taken at a previous college by October 1.
  4. Meet with an advisor to review your readiness to apply to the program. To set up an appointment call 810-989-5520.

 

Fulfillment of these criteria does not guarantee admission to the nursing program.

APPLYING FOR ADMISSION

 

Persons seeking admission to the RN - Associate Degree Nursing (ADN)- AASNT, program must:

 

  1. Students not currently enrolled with SC4 submit a completed Application for Admission to SC4 to the Enrollment Services office by October 1, of the year prior to program start. Indicate on the application the program of study:  AGEGE - General Education. Students applying for admission will receive a letter of receipt via email.
  2. Submit a completed Health Science Application by October 1 for Transition Nursing (AASNT). Students applying for admission will receive a letter of receipt via email.
  3. Submit a copy of your current unencumbered Michigan professional LPN or HCP licensure to the Nursing Dept. either by fax (810) 989-5667 or email nursing@sc4.edu, once received permission will be given to enroll in ADN 123/123L. This must be submitted by Oct. 1, of the year prior to program start.
  4. Provide evidence of work experience as an LPN or HCP from your most recent employer (Pay stubs not accepted), letter from your employer OR resume showing your work experience as an LPN/HCP. This must be submitted by Oct. 1 of the application year to the Nursing Office.
  5. LPNs with strong, up-to-date drug knowledge may consider taking the NLN Pharmacology competency exam to waive ADN 124. It must be taken within two years of admission to the ADN program. Applicants planning to pursue a career in registered nursing who have a criminal record of felony or misdemeanor conviction should contact the Health and Human Services division to determine employment restrictions based upon these convictions

 

ACCEPTANCE PROCEDURE

 

  1. Qualified applications will be reviewed by the Nursing Department in the fall semester of the application year. The transition program begins in the winter semester (January). Notification of applicant acceptances and rejections will be mailed. Acceptance into the program is based on space availability and admission criteria compliance.
  2. Accepted applicants will be required to attend an ADN program orientation prior to admission. Class schedules will be distributed during orientation.
  3. Before classes begin, students must submit a completed Physical Examination Form. Forms needed for physical will be provided during orientation. Evidence of current CPR for the Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association or the Red Cross must be provided. Online only courses will not be accepted. A course will be made available to you if you are not a current Healthcare Provider BLS card holder.
  4. Before semester starts students must submit documents required to participate in clinical: Health Physical, Health Care Provider BLS certification, Vaccination records, Negative 10-panel drug screen, and a criminal background check. All requirements will be reviewed during orientation.
