CERTIFICATE

The Emergency Services Certificate is designed to impart the skills, knowledge, and understanding necessary to be successful in and to increase the professionalization of, the emergency responder. This program develops technical competency and prepares the student for managerial and leadership positions in municipal, industrial, and business areas of fire protection, suppression, and prevention in addition to learning Emergency Medical Technician skills necessary to work in the medical field on an ambulance, in an Emergency Room, or a doctor’s office. Students are expected to take courses in the order described in the model schedule provided in the catalog. Each semester is meant to be completed in its entirety. Each short-term course builds on the previous course.

Program Outcomes/Objectives:

When students complete this program, they will be able to:

  1. define Emergency Medical Services
  2. demonstrate the skills involved in assessment of a patient’s vital signs
  3. demonstrate knowledge of the legal aspects of the fire service and emergency medical service fields
  4. discuss the relationship of cells, tissues, organs and body systems
  5. demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills with supervisors, peers and the public
  6. identify hazardous materials, hazardous properties, and successful emergency scene operations

Courses FS 100-106 have an Agility Testing prerequisite. Students should contact the Allied Health Office at (810) 989-5666 for information on testing dates and times.
